About the Class
Ashtanga is a particular style of yoga that is made up of six series of asanas (physical postures). Each series has a set amount of poses that are always practiced. This class will focus only on the primary series of Ashtanga yoga, with possible inclusion of some of the postures in the second (or intermediate) series.
This depends on the progression of the students in the class. Known to many yogi’s as a more intense style of asana practice, Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga really builds strength in the body whilst simultaneously increasing flexibility.
It is a practice that truly supports the body in every way. The primary series itself is known as a therapeutic one due to the cleansing and invigorating effect it has on the body and mind.
Although the primary series is made up of approximately 72 poses, not all will be practiced in each session. In fact, there will be a lot of repetition of the same set of poses. This will help students to really understand and break down each pose as well as notice the changes they experience from week to week, both physically and mentally.
This is a major advantage when using a series of postures that are repetitive. In this way students can also start to build up muscle memory and go beyond focusing simply on the body, but start to really harness the power of their breath which in turn allows for a calmer, more focused mind.
Students of every level are welcome to attend the class. Adjustments will always be given according to the individual student’s needs. It is essential for everyone to remember that yoga is about honouring our bodies and not about achieving a particular goal. This is a key factor in the practice – learning to detach from any possible future outcome. This is the only way progress can be made and a deeper connection to oneself established. Please remember to bring a bottle of water and a towel.
