About the Class

Baby On Board is a specialized pre-natal fitness class for mums-to-be!

If you were a frequent gym-goer/weight-lifter prior to pregnancy, you’ll be happy to hear that YES you can continue to lift weights and attend the gym during pregnancy! It’s actually extremely important to keep up your fitness routine. Baby On Board will help you to re-adjust your fitness routine to one that is more appropriate during this life-phase.

If you’re a beginner, that’s fine too! It’s better to start moving gently than to be sedentary throughout these 9 months.

Keeping active while pregnant should be one of your main priorities as it benefits you both physically and mentally. This class keeps you moving, maintains your overall strength and keeps you connected to your core. All of this will help to keep aches and pains to a minimum, help you through labour and also help you have a smoother and quicker recovery post-birth.

In this class you’ll perform a variety of feel-good stretches designed especially for the pregnant woman. You’ll also be guided through pregnancy-safe exercise while being coached on how to move optimally and how to breathe – this is of utmost importance in order to keep pressure on your core to a minimum. In class we’ll also perform gentle core (includes the pelvic floor!) activation exercises, which will help to keep you connected with your core. Exercises are functional and life-like, preparing you for life and for the demands of early motherhood!

As a new mum (or even more so if you’re a second time mum!), you’re probably spending plenty of time carrying the baby, lifting him/her up from the cot and carrying prams and car seats around. Doing all of this without using your core muscles and with improper breathing patterns is going to cause issues, such as back pain or even pelvic floor issues such as incontinence. These are common complaints among expectant women and new mums. In Baby On Board, you’ll learn how to carry in the most optimal way, with minimum pressure on your core, and also learn how to activate your core to support you when doing these activities.

Even though the exercises are gentle, you’ll still break out a sweat and might even wake up with muscle soreness the next day! Also, each and every class has a different format, which keeps things exciting and challenging since you’ll never know what to expect. We use a range of functional training tools such as sandbags, kettlebells, TRX and more!

We pride ourselves with our attention to detail and small groups. You’ll learn how to exercise properly, use your core to support you in every single thing that you do and also learn optimal breathing strategies, making sure you get the most out of each and every workout, and also ensuring that you don’t get injured in the process. It’s basically just like having your very own personal trainer, but also having training buddies to workout with too!

If you’re keen on focusing on your health and wellbeing and maintaining your core and overall strength during this very special time, in a fun and effective way, then this class is for you! Please remember to bring a bottle of water and a towel.

After having my son, I knew it would take time to get my pre-pregnancy body back. I found out about Angele’s classes aimed at new mums and decided to start there. For me, this was about more than just losing some weight, it was about finding some much needed time to dedicate to myself and my own happiness and well-being. I found out about Active Spirit when I was browsing the internet in search of prenatal classes. I was looking for a replacement for running, since at around 4 months into my pregnancy I started finding it increasingly difficult to go out for my usual runs. During my first few one-to-one sessions, Angele thoroughly explained the importance of proper breathing, care of the core and what I should be focusing on during exercise such that it is more effective and beneficial in my day to day life.
